We, the Global Clean Clothes Campaign Network, stand in solidarity with the arrested labour activists, Carol Ng and Winnie Yu, in Hong Kong.
The labour activists were amongst the 47 charged pro-democracy candidates who took part in primary elections last July.
They were merely participating in a democratic process but got prosecuted with conspiracy to commit subversion under the national security law.
We condemn the crackdown and demand all those detained be released and no further arrests made.
We will continue to closely follow the situation and be ready to support in our best capacity.
An extract from a letter from Carol Ng, Chair of HKCTU, who has been in custody since Feb 28th, 2021 for allegedly breaching the national security law: “The experience of these four days (court mentioning) is really precious. The union often says "be part of something big", and it is now realized! I don't know how the media covers it, but this trial of 47 democrats is historic and unprecedented in the history of Hong Kong, and I felt honored to be part of it.”
Political crackdown does not ends there. Lee Cheuk Yan, General Secretary of HKCTU was convicted together with 8 activists for an unauthorized protest in 2019 on Apr 1, 2021. His sentence will be announced on April 16, 2021.
